Wearing Ducky Out

So now that we know our little demon dog is “normal” — at least by our vet’s definition!*– we are looking for ways to wear her out so she isn’t so dang vociferous in the mornings.

*If you missed that revelation, you can read about it here.

Not that I really mind it, but if she wakes hubby up, I get to hear about it.  One way or another.  All. Day. Long.

So, I decided to try something.

Ducky LOVES sunbathing at daycare.  Especially if her boyfriend, Casper, is there to play with.  Not having Casper around, I improvise.  I use her favorite outdoor toy.  Her Kong Bounzer.  And we play keep away, chase, and gotcha in between short and long sunbaths.

And Shadow joins in at times while Callie watches all the silliness from her dirt beds in the shade.  I had to shoot the video myself on my phone so excuse its questionable quality.

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!  Thank you to all who have served and sacrificed, as well as those who are serving and sacrificing.  My Dad served as a chief engineer in the US Merchant Marines during WWII. As a personal tribute to him, I have chosen this day to wear my National WWII Memorial commemorative tee shirt for the first time this summer.

The girls and I are joining this week’s edition of the Monday Mischief Blog Hop.  Please check out the other posts by clicking on the posts in the Linky List.

Lots of play and walking around the yard — make that running — do a pretty good job. Unfortunately we live on a very busy, dangerous, main road. I won’t even walk on it alone, never mind with my dogs. (No sidewalks.)

Proper exercise is so key to a dog’s well-being and anxiety level. Jack was on Prozac when he was in the shelter, but we wanted to get him off that as quick as we could, so we relied on exercise both mental and physical. You should look into getting on of your neighborhood kids to walk Ducky everyday for an hour for a few bucks. I Bet that would make help make a difference too. Good luck.

I hear where you’re coming from; but (1) we don’t live in a neighborhood — we live on a busy, dangerous, major road; and (2) we don’t have kids nearby that we would trust with any of our dogs. So, I have to rely on my own resources.

Looks like Ducky likes to play keep-away. 🙂 I would work on her obedience in your yard. Teach her come or heel and make her pay attention to you. That kind of activity can work to tire out a dog every bit as much as a walk. She may never be a retriever, but even if she drops the toy and comes over for obedience work periodically during a play session, I bet you will see her using her brain and that will wear her out. I love your idea of giving her a job and I would try to incorporate that in to all aspects of her life for a bit to see if it makes a difference. If she likes to jump, the other thing is to put out things in your yard that she can jump over, (boxes or other obstacles). If she will chase after the toy throw it so she jumps over the obstacles (nothing too high to start). Hubby does this in our basement in the winter to tire our dogs out and it works (but you would need to get the toy back to do it multiple times so another thing to work on…lol).

Ducky’s favorite game is keep away! And she makes me laugh. She’s also helped me lose about 8 pounds so far this Spring — playing chase around the yard! Part of her job is helping me keep Callie and Shadow active…and she’s very good at that! I like to incorporate some obedience work into play time with all 3 girls. With Callie and Shadow, it has always been easy because all they want is to make me happy. But with Ducky, it’s a little more challenging. It’s a bit challenging, too, to work with Ducky when Shadow becomes “Velcro Dog”, as she always does when one of her sisters is getting any kind of attention. Sigh.

My dogs would love that huge Kong toy! Ducky reminds me of Teddy the way she runs off with the toy and doesn’t give it back! Hope you had an awesome Memorial Day!

One thing’s for sure — I get plenty of exercise playing with Ducky in the backyard! 🙂

I bet you’re glad to be off for the summer!! Spend more time with the family, both human and canine!!
